2014 Rough Habit Plate Final Field Confirmed

May 7th, 2014

A talented group of 14 three-year-olds have been confirmed to line up at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse this weekend to contest the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m), highlighted by several runners making their maiden appearance north of the border.

Returning to the track in typically competitive form this season, trainer Chris Waller has confirmed Vilanova for a tilt at the 2014 Rough Habit Plate.

Claiming two wins and seven places from 20 competitive starts to date, Vilanova was a standout performer over the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival; unlucky to finish second in each of the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) and Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) before overcoming poor position to run fourth in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m).

Strolling home to win the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) most notably this season, Waller is understandably confident the Commands gelding will figure in serious contention this weekend, particularly having claiming the ideal gate 2 at Wednesday’s barrier draw.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Rough Habit Plate is in-form Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer Pheidon.

Securing three wins and three places from just seven competitive races so far, Pheidon has quickly shot to the forefront of Australia’s up-and-coming staying community; particularly over his three-most recent starts.

Jogging home to win the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) ahead of fellow Rough Habit Plate acceptor Cadillac Mountain on March 14th, the Al Maher gelding was unlucky to finish sixth when blocked for a run in the Group 2 Nathan Berry Tulloch Stakes (2000m) on April 5th before returning to peak condition when running a close second in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) last time out.

Allocated the inside barrier for the Rough Habit Plate, Waterhouse has underlined several major events over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival as likely targets for Pheidon this season, who will be partnered by leading jockey Nash Rawiller this weekend.

One of two Peter Moody-trained horses confirmed for the 2014 Rough Habit Plate along with classy stable mate Saguaro, Cadillac Mountain will have to overcome the wide and awkward barrier 12 if to claim success this weekend.

While unable to match the heavy going and finishing mid-pack in both the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) most recently, Cadillac Mountain offers a legitimate chance of success this weekend with in-form jockey Stephen Baster on board.

Claiming two wins from just six starts to date, Saguaro has steadily built to the task at hand since returning to racing in January; winning each of his first two races before debuting in Brisbane with an unlucky run for seventh in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) last time out, having been hampered in the early final straight.

Charged with the un-enviable task of overcoming the outside barrier 14, Moody is confident proven jockey Chris Munce will get the best from his runner this weekend.
