Producing an impressive record of three victories and three places from just seven competitive starts to date, trainer Gai Waterhouse has elected to nominate Pheidon for the 2014 Rough Habit Plate.

Claiming back-to-back victories in his career opening performances, Pheidon finished second amongst talented company in the Inglis Bonus (1600m) on January 25th; continually building in form and experience on his way to victory in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) on March 14th in what was his maiden appearance in a Group level event.

Unlucky to finish sixth when blocked for a run in the Group 2 Nathan Berry Tulloch Stakes (2000m) on April 5th, the Al Maher gelding returned to typically competitive form when running on to finish second in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) last time out.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 Rough Habit Plate is talented Kiwi raider Telepathic.

Securing an impressive total of three wins and two places from just six races so far, Telepathic has quickly shot to the forefront of the New Zealand three-year-old community; finishing an unlucky second in two starts over her maiden preparation in the 2013 spring and claiming the Funtime Food Limited Maiden (1200m) most notable on October 7th.

Returning to the track in peak condition this time in, the Mossman filly strolled home to win the Lindauer Three-Year-Old Open (1200m) first-up on April 12th before repeating the dose in the Governor General’s Cup (1600m) last time out.

Trainer Donna Logan, who experienced resounding success over the 2014 autumn in saddling Rising Romance to success in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) on April 19th, has also included Telepathic in nominations for the XXXX Gold Handicap (1600m) this weekend, and will allow Wednesday’s final fields and barrier draws dictate the path taken.

Trainer Peter Moody is poised to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Rough Habit Plate, having nominated classy stable mates Cadillac Mountain and Saguaro for an appearance this weekend.

Winner of two of eight starts and placing in a further two, Cadillac Mountain produced a strong turn of foot to finish second behind Pheidon in the Alister Clark Stakes on March 14th, overcoming poor position and running conditions to finish eighth in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) just two weeks later most notably.

Unable to handle the class of any of his three starts at Group level so far, Moody is confident the step-up in distance is precisely what is needed for Saguaro, who finished seventh in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm last time out.

A final field of 16 and barrier draw for the 2014 Rough Habit Plate is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
